Her real name was Florence Martus and she took it upon herself to be the unofficial greeter of all ships that entered and left the Port of Savannah, Georgia between 1887 and 1931. There is a lot of legends that try to justify her reason for doing so. One of them being that she had fallen in love with a sailor and wanted to make sure he would find her when she returned. Regardless of her intentions she became another icon to the lovely city of Savannah, her with her dog. Her legend is perpetuated by a statue on River St. in Savannah, Ga.
